We have attempted to anticipate most common questions a prospective client may have, although, should you have a question we neglected to address please email at: info@lok-alert.com or system or engineering questions to: engineering@lok-alert.com

Questions:

How many wireless devices can be used at one site?
A. : Basically as many as required up to several hundred

How many belt pagers can be used at one site or a system?
A. : There is no limit, although, if in the same common system all paging receivers will alert and report every incident initiated by a wireless lock out device deployed at the job-site or in that system.

How many office receiving terminals can be incorporated in a system or at a site?
A. : However many that is required to meet a particular users needs and/or budget the number of receiving terminals used in a system or on a site has no impact. These units can be used mobile (in vehicle) or used in office at the user’s election. They come packaged complete with mobile mounting hardware and DC power harness.

Can I use the local alert models (LA-5) in a wireless system that incorporates lock out models, belt pagers, and or office receiver terminals?
A. : Yes, the wireless system will alert and report normally, although the local alerting lock out device or devices will only alert audibly in the direct vicinity of their application. The local alerting device (LA-5) will not report to the pagers or office receiving units. Warning employees in that direct area of impending danger.

If I incorporate an office receiving terminal in my firm’s safety shack and do not want to use a standalone strip printer. Can I integrate the terminals reporting function to my existing computer system?
A. : Yes

If I incorporate a receiving terminal in my firm’s safety vehicle, Can I use the standalone printer for paper record of system events?
A. : Yes

Can I connect it to a laptop in the vehicle?
A. : Yes, it would require a software package and serial I.O. cable

Does Lok-Alert, LLC offer software for system event logging?
A. : Yes

Will Lok-Alert’s Engineering Staff assist me in system planning?
A. : Yes at no additional fee unless a site visit is required.

Can I use the Lok-Alert models inside and outside and in all weather environments?
A. : Yes

How do I turn the Lok-Alert models “on”?
A. : All Lok-Alert models turn “on” automatically as soon as it is removed from the charger stand and remains on until placed back on the charger stand.

How are the Lok-Alert models turned “off”?
A. : By placing the unit back on the charger stand.

Can the Lok-Alert models be used in a volatile Environment?
A. : Yes, there are no open switching contacts or other components capable of generating spark plus all electronics are contained in a sealed enclosure.

What about extremely wet operating environments?
A. : The units are completely sealed.

What about excessive heat and cold?
A. : Conditions seen in even abnormal weather environments say: 140 degrees Fahrenheit to -40 degrees Fahrenheit the units will operate normally. They are not designed to operate at extreme temperatures, such as, inside an operating boiler in operating ovens/kilns, operating furnaces, operating extremely low temperature freezers or cryogenic chambers.

Can alternate boot colors be ordered complying with standard color coding used for electrical, waste water, water, gas, steam, and etc.?
A. : Yes, standard colors are available on order. The units are shipped with a generic boot color of electric yellow.

How long will the Lok-Alert models operate in the field at a Job Site between recharges?
A. : Reliably, 7 to 10 full days

If batteries begin to fail in a particular unit after it has been in the field for a while, can the user replace the batteries without returning the unit to Lok-Alert?
A. : Yes, the battery pack is easily field replaceable.

Can one charger be purchased to support several Lok-Alert wireless and or local alerting models?
A. : Technically yes, although, system operation would be extremely clumsy in that the units would have to be rotated in the charger at some pre set client organized schedule, and erroneous reporting of status would be encountered by all receiving equipment. I would highly recommend against this approach to a system. In the near future Lok-Alert intends on introducing a recharger unit having four docking positions and optional expansion modules in groups of four for a total capacity of 12 units.

Can two or more separate Lok-Alert Wireless systems be used on one job-site without conflict in reporting or interfering with the other?
A. : Yes, the systems are completely programmable. As an example one system could be programmed “Electrical Safety” and the other:” Steam Plant Control”. Both systems would report their status to independent receiving devices or common receiving devices if so set up.

What if the area of my Job Site is expansive, will the Lok-Alert models still communicate with all belt pagers, mobile receivers, and/or office receivers in a system?
A. : Yes, depending on actual range and topography, repeaters may be required.

What about metal structures, will they interfere with communications?
A. : They could, but generally not. If the density of metal structures was such that it created a relative impact on communication between the Look-Alert models and any receiving point either belt pager, office receiving terminal, or mobile receiving terminal then repeaters may be required.

What about interference with other communications or wireless equipment?
A. : There should be no effect on other communications or wireless equipment or caused by such equipment.

What about communicating outside to inside a building or vice versa?
A. : In most cases wood framed, masonry, and structures with doors and windows will not interfere with operation of the devices, although, in the case of completely closed metal structures where radio waves cannot penetrate. All wireless models will operate inside to inside or outside to outside but not inside to outside or vice versa unless an optional repeater is incorporated. Structures of any type have no effect on the local alerting model (LA-5).

What is the range of the Lok-Alert wireless units?
A. : All wireless Lok-Alert models have excellent open field range characteristics, and in all non-restricted applications have an operating range of more than a mile. Depending on the exact operating environment this open field range may or may not be degraded dependant on surrounding structures and surroundings creating attenuation. In applications requiring extended range repeaters are optionally available.

Can the wireless Lok-Alert units be custom programmed with data more suited to my operation?
A. : Yes, the Lok-Alert models are designed to allow a user to custom program each unit with the information that a user desires. As an example the unit could be programmed to report: “Kilroy construction, Lock Out #1”, or “Hippo HVAC, Lock OUT #9”, or “Electrical Maintenance, Lock Out #5” or Etc. All other data such as: “SECURE” UNSECURE”, TIME OF OCCURANCE, DATE OF OCCURANCE are hard programmed unless specified at time of order.

Can a Lok-Alert unit be programmed with a specific employee’s name?
A. : Yes

Will Lok-Alert, LLC preprogram the units I order for me in the manor I require?
A. : Yes, if specified at the time of order

What if my firm endures problems in programming, is there a help line we may contact for assistance?
A. : Yes, call engineering for direct assistance during business hours or email: engineering@lok-alert.com and we will respond within 24 hours.

Can the wireless Lok-Alert devices be used in applications where extreme topology exists?
A: Yes, when it is desired to use wireless lock out devices in job-site environments where the existing topography or geology is extreme. Lok-Alert, LLC offers optional repeaters or BDAs (Bi- directional amplifiers) to meet these needs. (Contact: engineering @ engineering@lok- alert.com) The Lok-Alert local alerting device (LA-5) is unaffected by this type of operating environment.

What about a job site, a plant or a production facility application: that has an extreme high density of preexisting machinery, piping, metal structures, throughout the area of desired use. Can we use the lok-Alert wireless system?
A: Yes, when it is desired to use wireless lock out devices in job-sites, plants, or production facilities where: a high density of metal structures, piping, holding tanks, machinery and etc. exist, Lok-Alert, LLC offers optional repeaters or BDAs (Bi-directional amplifiers) to meet these needs. (Contact: engineering @ engineering@lok-alert.com) The Lok-Alert local alerting device (LA-5) is unaffected by this type of operating environment.

What about tunneling and mining applications? Can we use the lok-Alert wireless system?
A: Yes, tunneling and mining applications definitely require the user to incorporate the optional BDAs to afford reliable “in-tunnel” or” in- shaft” communication of the lok-Alert wireless devices. This would provide for surface to below ground operation also. Lok-Alert, LLC offers optional repeaters or BDAs (Bi-directional amplifiers) to meet these needs. (Contact: engineering @ engineering@lok-alert.com) The Lok-Alert local alerting device (LA-5) is unaffected by this type of operating environment.

In my application I desire to incorporate the lok-Alert wireless lock out devices in a system with several sub- groups, such as: (1) Electrical (2) Mechanical (3) Steam Plant and (4) Construction. Can all lok-alert units in all groups report to a common receiving terminal unit located to provide activity logging and management control at our safety office facility? Will each unit in a sub-group report its activity as an identifiable entity in that sub-group? Can I have more than one safety personnel or worker assignable in a sub-group be alerted on their personal belt pagers without affecting safety personnel in other groups or sub-groups also carrying belt pagers responding to wireless lock out devices in their group?
A: The lok-Alert systems are completely programmable. You may have as many sub-groups as desired within a given system. Each group can report to any number of personal belt pagers or receiving terminals assigned to that system exclusively, or receiving terminal can be programmed to report data from: (1) one specific wireless lock out unit (2) several wireless lock out units (3) one group of wireless lock out units exclusively (4) from all groups if desired or (5) any combination desired. If desired any personal belt pager can be programmed to alert from: (1) a specific wireless lock out device in a group or sub-group (2) all wireless lock out units in that group or sub-group (3) several select wireless lock out units in a group or sub-group (4) all wireless lock out units in all groups and sub-groups (4) select wireless lock out units in all groups or sub-groups. This allows the end user to build a system encompassing several dependant or independent sub-systems.

Our firm is a manufacturing facility of heavy implements. How can we implement the Lok-Alert system to alert employees performing maintenance in and on hazardous machinery or areas of our facility? We also wish to have hard copies of all lock out activity on site. Can your system provide this?
A: This application is exactly what the Lok-Alert system was designed for, so the answer is yes. Your second question per record keeping of all “on site” lock out activity is also a standard feature of our receiving terminal. All you require is our optional printer and you are up and running. Should your firm elect they could provide the printer in house. The only specification that must be met is that it has a parallel interface. Your firm could if required interface the receiving terminal to say an existing desk top or laptop computer. (See below)
